Young Jamie Morton is playing with his toy soldiers when he first meets Charles Jacobs. A minister, Jacobs has just arrived in the small New England town and, with his wife, will transform the local church.

The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Rev. Jacobs-including Jamie's mother and sister. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, the preacher curses God and is banished from the shocked town.

Fleeing his own family's horrific loss, an adult Jamie lives a nomadic life as a musician. In his 30s-addicted to heroin-he meets Jacobs again, and their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil's devising.
